Is Tommy Pham the new Rickey Henderson? He was certainly channeling the Rickey of S.D. Padres history on Friday nights with two Stolen bases with ease in the first game of the year. He’s on pace for 120 stolen bases if he can keep it up.
The story of the night for Padres fans, though? Not running, but run support. It could also be any number of good news bullet points depending on how you view the Padres in 2020.
- Tatis Jr. had an energetic double
- Tommy Pham with a fantastic debut this year
- Eric Hosmer with a 3 run double that put the Padres confidently in the lead; and a second 3 run double that all but put the final nail in the coffin for the D-Backs by being driven to the 357 foot mark at the wall. #357MagnumHosmer He’s also on pace to absolutely CRUSH Hack Wilson’s all-time season record of 191 RBI’s – Hosmer looks to be hitting 360 RBI’s, and this in a season that spans only 60 games #ThereWillBeBlood
- Chris Paddack was cruising. While his outing wasn’t Shane Beiber level, he’s probably got one of the best 5 or 6 performances in all of baseball on 2020’s opening day.
- Mark Grant’s ridiculous mustache #IMustacheYouAQuestion And with Kike Hernandez crushing it over there in Los Angeles, I’m on team #PornStache with Kike instead of Mark Grant’s.
It’s just so enjoyable to see the Padres have so much fun while cruising through a game against a pretty decent D-backs team.
Yes, it’s the first game and it’s not even over yet as Javy Guerra comes into the 9th inning. But it sure feels good to have baseball back and see the Padres doing well on opening day. We’ll take this kind of gameplay any day. Don’t sleep on the San Diego Padres in 2020, shortened awkward season as it may be. Final result: 7-2 Padres with a Chris Paddack win, and a blockbuster game by Eric Hosmer.
